Earth Mirrors

Earth Mirror (See Yourself in the Dirt)
2025
Unfired clay, burnished with graphite until the surface holds a reflection.
23cm Diameter

It seems a paradox — to see yourself in dirt. But burnishing is repetitive touch, and it is only through that touch that the reflection becomes possible. Touch makes something visible.

There is also something older here. Burnishing returns clay to a state before it fragmented, millions of years ago, into particles. Stone can hold a reflection. This is clay becoming stone again.

A dark surface to look into that is never perfect. The face that looks back is distorted, caught off guard. Sometimes monstrous. Sometimes more like you than a usual mirror. A scrying vessel made from ancient ground.
